Or Lean. Aren’t These BPM Training?

Part 1: This will discuss the condition of the capability of BPM. The practice is meant by me to carry out BPM, the pitfalls, the issues. This won’t look, specifically at tools, but may cover methodologies. Part 2: Will discuss the state of the technology encircling BPM. Part 3: This will look at the state of what to come in BPM and make an effort to extrapolate where this will take us and what the problems will be.

The State of training. High failure rate of projects. I believe that I won’t get a lot of easily make a straightforward statement about BPM “BPM is not very well defined”. The boundaries and borders are flexible as it pertains to defining what BPM is and where it can be applied.

Last calendar year, Thomas Olbrich and I sat down and came up with The BPM Nexus (along with unique creator Theo Priestley) and we wanted to create a BPM definition which we’re able to use to create consensus amongst practitioners. Our efforts – regrettably – came to very little for a true number of reasons which are not important now. But what did emerge from the discussions which took place was the fact that so few folks have a common understanding of what BPM means precisely. They know very well what BPM means to them and the know what they do as it pertains to BPM.

But to sit back and write a typical definition of BPM that everyone can agree on is difficult. Because of this there have been lots of separate initiatives targeted at splitting BPM into element parts – or sub-parts – to permit vendors, particularly, to add to these niches and enhance their own offerings.

The term “Social BPM” has abruptly appeared in the BPM vernacular along with “ACM” or Adaptive Case Management. As typical, I have to be very explicit with the BPM (Business Process Management). 3. BPM as a profile of the business procedures of the business, and the procedures and tools for governing the design, execution, and advancement of this portfolio (business BPM system or business BPM-centric solution).

Whilst I believe I can align with this it does indicate that there are – at the minimum – a number of possible interpretations of BPM. This, alone, must be causing problems. What constitutes BPM training? Is there an internationally recognized standard for BPM training? I’d maintain that there isn’t.

Not that this is always a problem, but unlike other officially accepted training requirements (for things like task management or accountancy) there doesn’t appear to be a recognised body accountable for providing this training. But what about BPM? Or Lean. Aren’t these BPM training? I’d maintain that none of them of these constitutes BPM training, but all of them take its sub-set of BPM training.

Does BPMN constitutes the training we are in need of? No. BPMN is, again, a subset of the training that is needed. It is a graphical representation for specifying business processes in a business process model. Nonetheless it isn’t the only way to do it. That is one of several notations you can use for modeling and what it doesn’t do is coach the fundamentals of how to discover and map an activity. As a business leader, it is all perfectly to hear about BPM and what it can do for your business.

But at this time there simply isn’t a sizable number of case studies that can conclusively show that BPM implementation will save your business fortunes or improve your efficiency indeed. The case studies that do exist are mostly vendor produced and they are selected to identify the best-case scenarios.
